Whats In Your Scrub? Herbal or Chemical?

Hello beautiful people :) So my question to you for this week is -
 What's in your scrub?

Regular Scrubbing = Dead/Dry cells removed = Healthy glowing skin!

So whats exactly is in your Scrub? And what are the ingredients you should look out for when buying or making a Scrub? And  what precautions should you take?

Let's Begin -

Natural Scrubs - Anything that is slightly abrasive and granulated will help you to scrub away the dead skin cells. Common substances used are -

1. Powdered/Granulated sugar -  A very fine product which can be used as a scrub at home. Additional benefit is that since it contains no oils at all ( plain sugar is just glucose) it wont clog your pores. So it gently scrubs and then melts away. It can also soften the rough areas of your body like knees and elbows.

2. Rice Powder - Another very common household scrub.Fine grainy texture that softens when mixed with water but will not melt away. Has been said to improve skin complexion also.

3. Almond powder - Another very gentle and useful scrub. Has added benefit that it contains almond oil also. So its a very good moisturizing scrub for skin. This helps to improve complexion also.

4. Oatmeal powder - An easily available scrub for all skin types. Has moisturizing as well as cleansing properties. Restores skin moisture as well as removes surface dirt and impurities.

5. Common salt - Easily available and easy to use. Use them with oil to moisturize and scrub dry parts of body like knees, elbow, knuckles etc.

6. Walnuts - Another soothing natural scrub. This also has essential oils which moisturize skin as well as slough away dead cells.

 7. Strawberries - Did you know that strawberries contain alpha hydroxy acid? The same ingredient that is used in so many cosmetics scrubs and creams. I have explained the alpha & beta hydroxy acids below. Very good natural exfoliating agent. Use alone or in a face pack.

8. Loofah or body brush - These products are equally good at exfoliating your skin like all the above ingredients. In fact these are best for body scrubbing. Regular use of these will result in you have glowing akin always!

These natural scrubs can be used in different combinations and mixtures for different skin needs. Mix them with milk or rose water or curd or oil or lemon juice or cucumber juice or even plain water and use. Mix them with other ingredients and you can have your own face pack ready. Store them in containers in dry state and its always ready at hand.

Now for the second part.

Chemical scrubs - Chemical scrubs are of different types. Then can be present in cosmetics or you can get them done from dermatologists. Then they are called Chemical Peels or Microdermabrasion etc
These are best left to the experts who are trained to carry out these procedures.

At home you can also exfoliate your skin with many cosmetics and scrubs available in the market. These are the commonly listed ingredients in them -

1. Salicylic Acid - This ingredient is most commonly seen in products suggested for acne prone skin. Its is an excellent exfoliant and also prevent bacterial growth on skin. Take  look at your favorite face washes and you will find this listed somewhere.

2. Enzymes - Some enzymes which maybe used in cosmetic scrubs are Papain (papaya enzyme), Bromelin (pineapple enzyme). These enzymes loosen the dead cells on the skin surface and help in exfoliation.

3. Alpha & beta Hydroxy Acids (AHA's and BHA's) -  These are commonly mentioned as glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, malic acid. tartaric acid etc. Each one of them is derived from naturals sources only like sour milk, grapes, apples, sugarcanes etc. These are added in different concentrations in different cosmetics. These help in exfoliation as well as delaying the aging process. They remove the dead cells from the top layer of the skin as well as stimulate collagen formation. Thus they remove the fine wrinkles on the skin and also improve the elasticity of the skin. Good for aging and mature skin.

4 Micro Beads -  These are made of very tiny granules of Poly Ethylene Glycol. These are basically tiny plastic beads. Just mechanically scrub your skin. Some products may contain natural granules like jojoba, walnut, grape seeds etc.

Precautions to using scrubs of any kind -

1. Do not use scrubs on skin if you have inflammation of any kind - like acne, rosacea, sun burn etc. and other such conditions. It will worsen your skin condition even further. Do not use if you have severe acne without consulting your doctor. Stop using if you develop redness, irritation, itching, scaling of any kind.

2. Do not rub your skin too hard or roughly with the scrub. Follow gentle circular motion with finger tips only.

3. Do not use facial scrubs daily. It will injure your skin. Too much of even a good thing is bad. Remember that always!

4. Undertake chemical peels only under expert supervision. Do not go for waxing immediately after undergoing chemical peels. Take adequate protection against sun exposure. Always use a sunscreen.

5.  Moisturize you skin always. It will help maintain the youthful appearance of your skin for longer.

    1. Thanks for your comment Akanksha :) see dear blackheads are basically open pores which have secreted oil and the oil turned black after exposure to air.. To control blackheads you need to control the oil..Using oil in your scrub will only worsen the condition..If you are going for regular cleanups or facials the lady will remove them for you, in between use a face wash or scrub containing salicylic acid in.. common brands like neutrogena/clean & clear have them..u can use their scrubs also..Or u can use any brand u like..just look out for salicylic acid in it.. one can reduce the appearance of black heads that way..

as for the powder thing - they are all available in the market, if u want to make at home then -
For rice powder - first soak the rice and then dry it under the sun/fan and then make powder.
For almond powder - remove the brown skin and then grind in mixer.
Hope this helps :) keep reading for more such interesting posts..Take care..

  4. Hi dear.. Thanks for such an amazing answer!! :)
I have never gone for any facials.. :D I do them at home.. like using besand and fullers earth! but that's not for blackheads.. and about the srubs.. are they safe? My nose is a bit oily but rest of the skin is quite sensitive.like this one time, when I didn't protect my skin from sun, when I got home, at night I started getting red sore skin.. like a little patch on my face, then my stomach, above my eyebrow (it itches for a while but after washing with chilled water it goes away).. so is it safe for my skin?/
Thanks for your time and comment :)

    1. Your welcome dear :) there's no problem with doing your own facial at home.. If your skin doesnt have too many problems like acne/dryness etc.. You have the answer to your own question.. your nose is oily compared to your face.. that is what is causing the blackheads.. see everybody gets blackheads so dont be over concerned about it.. scrubs are safe if you dont over do them.. I'd say in case you are scared to try them.. see if a friend is using any scrub from neutrogena/ clean and clear or any other reputed brand.. and try a little bit, be very gently and use it only on your nose when you take a bath and at night.. see how your face responds.. if you see any redness stop using.. and if u see good results then you can buy it for your own self. And if you are absolutely against scrubs then try a face wash with some granules in it.. I think clean and clear makes such face washes.. or else continue with your usual skin care and scrub your nose with a little rice powder mixed with water/milk now and then.. salt is too harsh for skin, and dont use oil, it will only give you more blackheads not less. And btw dont be conscious of black heads at all. trust me every single person gets them.. we see them more cleary becos we stare at our noses in the mirror very closely.. Most people you meet wont even notice. If your skin is healthy and glowing otherwise, focus on the positive and feel happy :) so take care.. and stay beautiful always! ♥&heart;

    2. And ya for the redness i'd say that is heat rash.. dont step out in the sun without a good sunscreen and take umbrella/scarf/hat alaways.. and if your skin feels good with cold water then splash your face with it.. and dont touch or scratch those red areas.. your skin seems to be sensitive so take care in the sun..

  9. That's a great informative post. I used scrubs once in a while earlier but then last winter I got really dirty and ugly black marks on my forehead. It made me look so ugly. I stopped using Scrub for the fear of aggravating those little pimples and stopped going out of my home premises (because I was ashamed to). But then my cousin came to my rescue and took me to a very good skin doctor. She recommended wonderful medicines and 5-6 sessions of Chemical Peeling. I underwent 2 CP's till date and my skin looks just fine now. I'm happy with its state. No black marks, no spots..
Sometimes a Doctor does a better job for the skin than most cosmetics sold in the market. I'm sure you'll agree to that.
    Anyway, I'm your new follower.
Also, thank you so much for following my blog. Loved your comment too.

  10. Awww.. you are so kind to give such nice answers.. i mean well-written! :)
I only saw them when a friend pointed out :P
but if i use a scrub then what about the open pores? like small open pores? How to close them?
And one more question not related to this. When to use a Toner? I mean after or before moisturizing or cleaning? :)
    Thank you!

    1. Thanks for your lovely comment dear :) you see our pore sizes are determined by our genes. people with oily skin or those who sweat a lot have naturally open appearing pores.. the best way to deal with them is splash your face with cool water every time you wash your face.. A toner should be applied after washing your face and before moisturizing. Do not be overly concerned with your pore size, like I said before, most people wont even notice. Focus more on keeping your skin healthy and clear at all times. And drink lots of water. And choose the right kind of make up and you are on your way to looking like a Diva! and sure I will check out your post :)
